Many people have asked me, how the heck did you build a slide out? Well my
friends, its not that bad… .... I spent allot of time studying other slide outs
as well as checking out how they make them at the factory... This is how it
ended up.
Framing the opening the opening has a polyurethane silicon edge that has a
rounded bevel it allows the floor edge to extend out and drop down flush with
the rest of the floor.

The opening around the slide out is made from a 2x6 yellow pine header. It is
supported by a 2x2 cripple stud, and 2x4’s that extend to double top plate. I
used truss plates in the corners to keep everything square. There are about 30
screws in each side of the plates.

The frame is a factory rack and pinion gears, powered by a 30 amp 12 volt dc
motor. I ran power directly to the battery pack.


I made my own control circuit using 2 40 amp relays and a double rocker
momentary switch. It works very well. My control panel was taken out of range
hood. The slide control is shown as the generator start/stop switch (I will make
new labels later). That switch was perfect because, it doesn’t stay on, press it
and it goes out let go, and it stops.


The floor is made from 2 sheets of 5/8" exterior plywood, laminated together. I
bought 4x8 sheets and offset the seams. I used Elmer’s exterior wood glue, and
parked my mower on top of the sheets to make sure I had a good bond. I also out
1” screws at about a 6” square pattern. When you are done, you are left with a
very think heavy piece of wood. 4’ x 12’ I turned it over and cut the leading
edge with a 60 degree bevel. This is so the floor will pop up over the poly
ledge and slide in. I then extended the slide out legs as far as they would go
44”. Then I trimmed it for width and temporally screwed them in and ran it in
and out… very cool…When it slides out, the floor sits down flush with the rest
of the floor.

As far a framing a super slide... not as bad a you would think
For more support I glued and screwed a 2x4 on edge on the top of the floor. The
walls are then fastened (again with glue and 3” screws) on top of the 2x4 s
The new slide out frame then gets insulated and covered with luan and interior
wall paneling
